Roller Coasters

Hello,

This week in reading we had to do 3 tasks and blog 1. I picked roller coasters.
A roller coaster takes a lot engineering and will to design and make. You have to take in to account the weight, the g forces, velocity and also how secure it is to make sure that no one gets hurt or dies.

3 question a person would ask about roller coasters:

  • What is G force:

Google says : The g-force or gravitational force equivalent is mass-specific force, expressed in units of standard gravity. It is used for sustained accelerations, that cause a perception of weight. In other words it is how much gravity there is.

  • Why can’t roller coasters have big bumps:

A roller coaster realises on gravity and momentum to keep it going. If all of the bumps are giant then it won’t have enough momentum and will eventually stop.

  • What is a roller coaster:

A roller coaster is a ride in a cart where you go up, down, loop-de-loop and around corners on a metal or wooden track or rails.

For the create we could make our own roller coaster on google drawing:

Here is mine:

Have you ever been on a roller coaster.

Is Standing Better than Sitting?

In reading we read a book called “Don’t sit if you want to keep fit”. It was a quite interesting book the main idea was that standing helps the frontal lobe which can help with thinking and learning. But in the book it was later proven that it is exercise that helps; Regular exercise at least 5 days every week can help with learning. There was also a theory that fidgeting can help with focusing.

Our Create task was to make something to help with that:

(Creation is later on in the slideshow.)

How can we be Champions of Peace (PBL T3)

How can we be Champions of Peace?

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we were learning about ‘How we can be Champions of Peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are; The V hand sign which means Victory. A Dove which means peace, innocence and God’s forgiveness. The Olive branch which means pace and peace. And last but not least, the broken rifle which was created as the logo for War Resisters’ International, it means “Wars will cease when men refuse to fight”.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My Peace Artwork has the colours of the Yin-Yang Symbol and is shaped like Peace symbol with a Olive Branch coming out the top of it.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Jesus. I thought this person was a champion of peace because of all the good things he did including healing the sick, giving to others and doing many other miracles.

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because it was really fun learning about all the amazing things that peace is.

I learnt that there are lots of peace symbols, I learnt how to show peace and I learnt that there are loads of people that show peace.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by trying to do good things and put others before me, also try to spread kindness so peace can be found.

Who is your favourite peace maker?

Reading Wk 8 Term 3

Hello,

This week in reading I read a story called:
Nga Pakanga o Aotearoa, which is a story about the New Zealand Wars.
But instead of reading we had to find text features.

Text Features are things that you would usually find in Non-Fiction.
They are things like: Images, Maps, Timelines and many other things.

For the Create we had to do an drawing with as many features as we could add:

Here it is:

Seeing as we are taking about New Zealand;

What is your favorite New Zealand City or Town?

Graffiti on the Berlin Wall

Hello,
Today I learned about the Berlin Wall; Here are some things I learnt

  • Why the Wall was made:
The reason that the Berlin wall was created was because of one simple reason, So the Eastern Germans couldn’t escape to the West side.

  • When was the wall made?:
The Berlin wall was made on the 12th of August of 1961.

  • Who Controlled East Germany:
The Soviet Union controlled the East side of the Berlin wall with the Socialist Unity Party.

But the main focus was to create a poster on what graffiti we thought would be on the wall.
Seeing as they were trapped I came up with this;

What is your favorite country???

Math Wk6 Term 3

Hello,

This Week in math we started geometry.
We focused on Symmetry, Translation and Rotation.

What is Symmetry:
Symmetry is like a mirror. Also there are lines in symmetry.
For Example; If you have 1 line of symmetry then you will have 2 symmetry zones(1:2 Ratio).
In each zone it is Identical

There is also Rotation and Translation.
Rotation meaning how many rotations can you do with it looking the same until you get to the original side is up.
But Translation meaning what it would look like if the whole shape was symmetrical / copied & pasted.

For the create we had to make a poster with 6 different shapes with 6 different colour.
He mine is:

What is your Favorite shape?

Boot Camp

Hello,
This week I read a book called boot camp.
It was about some guy called Joey who is by the sounds of it a druggy and alcoholic.
Our goal was: Identify several ideas, discuss the author’s stance or purpose, and understand relationships in the text.

I made this Create:

Also as a second part we had to make either a backstory for Joey or what happens if they had added another page.

I decided to make his backstory here it is:

Thank you for reading this blog post. If you would like to read the story click here

Have you ever gone to a camp?

A Poets Poems

During the first few weeks of school we have been doing poetry.
So far we have been doing Haiku’s, Diamante’s, Autobiographical,  Limericks and List Poems.

My Favorite type of poem is the Limericks because they are the easiest to write.
I feel like I have gotten better at poetry because I can write them much faster.

Here is my create; I tried to explain what each poem meant but kind of failed.

What is your favorite type of poem?

Buzzy Buzzer

Recently we have started a new workshop about science. So today I am going to share with you guys our most recent question.
How can we make the buzzer make a sound with; 2 zinc nails, 2 copper nails, water, salt,
1 large beaker, 1 specimen jar and 1 buzzer (With + and – clips)?

Hypothesis:
I figured that if I just put the clips on 2 zinc nails and put it in the
specimen jar with salt it would work. My friend looked at a picture of it and figured out that you
had to clip the cables to either side of the specimen jar.

Once we did that the teacher told us to put water and mix salt with it.
No one ended up getting it until she said to change the nails for 1 copper and 1 zinc.
When we did this at first it didn’t work but we ended up switch them around and it started to buzz.

Salt + Water = Energy:
The reason it worked is because the salt was used as a battery in a way
that the energy could float around freely in the water.

The salt is an ionic bond. When the sodium and the chloride separate in the water
they were free to move around the water as positive and negative energy.
This separation of charge allows the solution to conduct electricity.

Instructions

  • Firstly, fill the large beaker with water to the 3/4 mark.
  • Now, attach the positive cable off the buzzer to either the zinc or copper nail.
  • Repeat number 2 but use the opposite nail.
  • Clip the clips and nails onto either side of the large beaker with the nails as far away from each other as possible.
  • Put a teaspoon of salt in the water and mix.
  • Finally the buzzer should be working. If not switch the nails around.

In Conclusion:
If I was to do this experiment again or something similar I now know that I would have to use 2 different nails and keep on trying.

Have you ever done a Science experiment?

Mid-Winter Breakfast No.2

Coming up on Friday the 30th of June is the SFOA Mid-Winter Breakfast.
I don’t know why but I’m guessing we are doing it to farewell the term.
As you should know from my last post the 4 options are going to be:
Porridge, Hotcakes, Sausage in Bread and Hot Chocolate/ Milo.

For the create I had to spin a wheel 45 times and record the results in 2 different graphs/charts.

It ended up  not even being close for first place, so lets hope this ins’t how it goes on Friday.

Here is my Create:

Statements:

  • Food was way more common to roll than beverages.
  • Sausage in bread and porridge tied.
  • Even though 33.3% of the time it landed on Hotcakes, everyone has the same chance of 25%.
  • It is all about chance.

Are you going to the Breakfast?
